Animoto’s big news! Video and new music

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Animoto, the storytelling tool that allows us to easily produce professional looking music videos.

Just in case you missed this week’s big Animoto news, tada! . . .

Our music videos can be even more videoish.  Now, in addition to text, images, and music, we can add video and simply edit those videoclips for our productions.

Here’s how the site describes the new feature and the process for adding video:

1. Get your video clips.

Upload clips from your camera or phone, or if you don’t have any, use some from our library (stocked with some good stuff from iStockphoto and Getty Images!). Mix them liberally among your pictures and text.

2. Pick your highlights.

No need for a complex video editor! Just find the parts of your video clips that you like best. You can choose up to 10-second highlights, though we recommend using 3-5 seconds for the best flow within an Animoto video.

3. Fine-tune.

For each highlight, decide whether you want to hear your clip’s audio or if you’d rather just keep playing the soundtrack instead. To pick more than one highlight from a clip, just use the duplicate feature.

In addition to the video elements, Animoto also recently beefed up its music library.  Students and teachers will find new choices in the Featured Tracks genre that include hiphop legend Mos Def, indie rock favorites The Walkmen, and hot new dance/electro artist Kid Sister.

If you are new to Animoto, you might want to take a look at sample Case Studies to discover its classroom possibilities.

To celebrate the new video feature, the Animoto team is holding a contest.  Unfortunately, you must be 18 or older to enter, but perhaps some teachers or teacher-librarians out there would be interested in winning:

an action-packed TRIP FOR TWO TO NEW YORK CITY! All you have to do is submit your best video. Sooooo easy. Here’s the deal: each week for five weeks, we’ll announce 2 finalists, and just for being a finalist you’ll get a Flip Mino HD (awesome) or a VholdR ContourHD helmet camcorder (really awesome). Then at the end we’ll announce the grand winner, which could be you!
