I will miss EBSCO (and so will our learners)
It is a sad day in Pennsylvania.
I just received this email from EBSCO:
Dear Librarians and Information Specialists,
EBSCO would like to thank POWERLibrary for over 10 years of partnership. Unfortunately, we have been notified that EBSCOhost databases and content will no longer be provided by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. While POWERLibrary’s EBSCOhost database subscriptions officially ended on December 31, 2009, EBSCO has ensured that access to the affected resources was uninterrupted for the standard one-month grace period. However, please be advised that this grace period will end on January 31, 2010. This means all schools and public library sites in Pennsylvania will no longer have access to the following EBSCOhost databases:
MasterFILE Premier
Business Source Premier
MAS Ultra – School Edition
Middle Search Plus
Primary Search
Newspaper Source
Teacher Reference Center
Auto Repair Reference Center
. . .
Thank you for your service to the library community of Pennsylvania. We look forward to hearing from you soon.
We lost the Professional Development Collection and History Reference Center, as well as our Groves, Oxford reference products in an cutback a little while ago. Facts for Learning appears to be gone too.
I do not know which vendors’ bids were accepted by our state, but I do know I cannot afford to take on any additional expenses mid-year to cover the gaps. And I know my budget next year will not allow me to pick up additional databases.

I understand that our State Library is doing what it can with a dramatically reduced budget.
My students and my teachers–students and teachers all over our state–will miss the critical tools they’ve relied on for so many years. They grew up with them.
