TEDxNYED (and an idea: Why not TEDx for TLs?)
Fourteen remarkable TEDxNYED videos are now available and embedable via YouTube
You may remember a while back I blogged about this professionaly focused version of the TED talks:
TEDxNYED is an all-day event designed to bring leading educators, innovators, and idealists together to share their vision of education. This event will provide a platform for administrators, teachers, and those passionate about education to connect, learn from these extraordinary speakers, and spread their ideas on how new media and technology are shaping the future of education. There will be live speakers, two recorded TED Talks, and a number of networking sessions both during and after the event. tedxnyed.com
As an example, here is Dan Meyer’s talk on teaching math:
Librarians and other educators will find lots to explore and share in this stellar array of brilliance. The TEDxNYED vides should absolutely be on your PD to-do list.
Independent TED events are spreading (for instance, TEDxNJLibraries is planned for May 7th). But I wonder if the school library world shouldn’t lead our own.
The TEDx site explains the concept:
In the spirit of "Ideas Worth Spreading," TEDx is a program that enables schools, businesses, libraries or just groups of friends to enjoy a TED-like experience through events they themselves organize, design and host. We’re supporting approved organizers by offering a free toolkit that includes detailed advice, the right to use recorded TEDTalks, promotion on our site, connection to other organizers, and a little piece of our brand in the form of the TEDx label.
So, could we gather our own brilliant speakers to present their very best? Those videos could present our voices in a super-compelling way. Could we do it before the next AASL or before the next SLJ Summit? Might a graduate school be willing to host and organize such an event?
