I like the core collection idea. In the district I left, which no longer has any “real” librarians, just aides, the middle school aide insists on filling her library with items that are not appropriate for middle schoolers–e.g., Gerald’s Game by King and Speak (even though Speak is in the high school curriculum). She says that “this is real life and kids need to read about real life.” A core collection would mean that at least she’d have some middle school titles.
