Yes, this mother of 4 boys is writing about fashion and hair. Those of you who know me, stop chuckling! I do need to provide books for those very fashionable females, also.
Actually I wanted to mention two titles I received recently: Fashion Modeling: Being Beautiful, Selling Clothes by Jen Jones. Part of the Snap series this title helps fill that constant query for fun books for girls. Our library is well-stocked with women in positive role models, intellectual and leadership positions. I celebrate everyone’s intelligence and their working brains more than their appearance. The Snap series adds to the daily interests of our girls.
Hair Dance! by Dinah Johnson with photographs by Kelly Johnso
n is a totally different title. This is a beautifully written, simple celebration of African-American hair. Braids are beautiful. Check out Kelly Johnson’s page with beautiful galleries of photographs. While searching for more information on this title, I found the "African American Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (AACBWI)" have their own myspace page. Cannot wait to use this title paired with many other high self-esteem books for our younger crowd.
There is a richness in the market for girls now. They can be brilliant, powerful, and beautiful. They can pursue their own interests. We are supporting their development. What a great time to be a girl!
