Interactive History Battles

The Battle of Bunker Hill: An Interactive History Adventure by Michael Burgan. Part of the YOU CHOOSE books with 3 story paths, 37 choices, and 14 endings. Capstone Press, 2008. RL: 3-4, IL: 3-7. ISBN-13: 978-1-4296-0159-7

Not only can you learn the facts about history, but you can experience making battlefield choices as a Patriot soldier, a British soldier, or a Boston civilian. History can be taught as black & white with clear winners and losers. Or history can be experienced and interacted with so the reader learns something deep within. The Battle at Bunker Hill helps create this time of experience between the reader and the story. With the 3 story paths or perspectives from 3 different types of characters, the reader can jump around history and consider "What might have been?" decisions. With only 110 pages, this is a fine introductory to interactive decision-making stories.

Remember the old Choose Your Own Adventure books? My oldest sons learned to read with those in kindergarten. They’d take them on family trips and read them aloud on car trips. We’d all yell for our choice and pout when the group disagreed. This is an excellent series to inspire students to place themselves in history.
