Techie Tisch is allowing me to share this information on the ChickieWicki she and Karen created for Karen’s students. Don’t you love the questions little ones ask? Techie Tisch also shot several little videos of her chickens to answer some of the students questions. Here’s Tisch:
A little over three weeks ago I loaned an egg incubator to my friend Karen. I also set her up with some eggs from my flock of chickens so she could do a unit about hatching chickens with her kids from school. She’s a librarian and a terrific one.
The past three weeks she has read books to the students about hatching chicks, they have read and researched how to set up the incubator and even created a website to ask questions of "eggsperts." It’s been a lot of fun and some of their questions have "cracked" me up.
I stopped by last Thursday to check on the progress, we tried to candle one of the eggs to see what was inside, but I left with a feeling that I was going to have to find somewhere to buy some baby chicks so that the children wouldn’t be disappointed when their eggs didn’t produce chicks. In other words, last week it didn’t look so good.
Then, this morning while I was getting ready to attend an all day computer training, my phone rings with a number I don’t recognize. "Hello?" I asked when I answered.
"Help!! It’s an EMERGENCY!" Came at me from the other end of the line.
A lot of things go through your mind when you hear this…and they all take less than a second to race by…I waited to hear what the emergency was before getting too caught in the urgency of the situation (whatever it was) because my mom was an emergency room nurse and I guess I inherited that mentality of seeking out information so that I can act accordingly. But my heart was beating quite a bit faster than it had been a moment before answering the phone.
Then the voice elaborated, "Iwalkedintoschoolthismorningandababychickhadhatched!" then a pause for breath, "What do I do now!!!???!!?!?!?"
Ah, the kind of emergency I can handle. Thank goodness for small fluffy blessings!
