Explode concept: Different values for reading

The concept that different types of reading have different values.

There was a discussion on one of the listserv’s of which I’m a member about how we should have a label for the type of reading that occurs when we are reading necessary things like cereal boxes, forms, instruction manuals. Someone suggested that was “necessary reading.”

I read manuals. How else could I learn “what else” a program can do than what I initially subject it to in my trials? I am happy to read cereal boxes and feel a sense of satisfaction when I finish reading one. You’d better hope the American public reads cereal boxes since ALA has partnered with Safeway foods for 5 different cereal boxes devoted to reading and libraries.
