I very much enjoyed this book. My review here: http://blogs.slj.com/teacozy/2012/03/05/review-froi-of-the-exiles/

The strength to me is the characters; and taking the country that is the enemy and making them less villianous. So for the "one note" countries bit, my take was this is how people see each other, especially in the circumstances of those books. Froi is removing that lack of nuance by a book that further explores this one country. To me, perhaps the biggers barrier for Printz and this title is it feels like half a book. No complaints, really -- just that I need to know how it ends to better evaluate things like the prophecy, Froi's role, etc.

I enjoyed Froi a lot, but it felt incredibly bloated to me--a lot of characters, a lot of pov switches, a lot of settings. I wanted a tighter book that focused on Froi and Quintana, and maybe Lucian and Phaedra (because I felt like those two relationships had a lot to say to each other). Instead we had all of those plus Finnikin and Beatriz and and and. Marchetta is a great writer and she manages to keep the balls in the air much better than most people, but it's just too much.

I show stars from Booklist, the Bulletin and PW. When I checked titlesource it shows a 5Q 3P rating from VOYA. So counting that as a star, we're at 4 stars out of 7 journals (all have reviewed it).
