I’m not sure I understand why we each only get one nomination, especially when we’re going to cut the list down further before voting. We have everybody’s top pick, but what if there’s a book that would have made everybody’s top five, but nobody nominated it? I’m only willing to vote in the straw poll for half of the ten titles that are allotted to me, so it’s frustrating that I can’t put forward MOONBIRD or TITANIC or DYING TO KNOW YOU or A CONFUSION OF PRINCES or . . .

I am surprised by how few surprises there are on the list — a lot of consensus seems to be a hallmark of this year.

But now we have to narrow it down to TEN? Just TEN for the shortlist? Maybe ten plus the four six-starred auto-forwards? (Clearly I am in the “bargaining” stage of grief for the books I love which will get cut.)

I’m sad for TITANIC, WE’VE GOT A JOB, and MONSTROUS BEAUTY. But otherwise, a really excellent list.
