Pyrite: A Seriously Decisive Win!

PyriteWell, we revoted, and boy-howdy do we have a decisive margin this time!

A few thoughts on the raw data: In the interest of time, I’m only going to share a few highlights here, but the deeper analysis is totally interesting and we wouldn’t want to deprive geeky like-minded souls, so later this week we’ll do a post, after the honor vote is done (see below for honor vote link), to share the full data and all sorts of thoughts on what it tells us.

Finally: since we’re online and virtual &etc., we didn’t have a perfect revote in terms of voters — approximately 24/30 people voted in the runoff, and we picked up about 10 new voters.

Anyway, enough introduction.

And… The winner is…

By a fairly significant margin: 13 first place votes, 3 second place, and 6 third place for a grand total of 80 points.

The next highest pointing title was, no surprise, THE LIE TREE, but it only grabbed 62 points total, and only 8 first place votes.

(The gap between The Lie Tree and the next highest book was even larger; March 3 and Still Life with Tornado both came in at 25 points.)

Comments are open for discussion of these results, and don’t forget to hop over and vote for up to four honor books here.

  1. Remind me again what the Pyrite record is for predicting the actual winner. We picked Bone Gap last year, didn’t we? What about other previous years? How successful are we historically at predicting the winner?

  2. 2016: Pyrite and Printz was Bone Gap
2015: Pyrite and Printz was I’ll Give You the Sun
    2014: Pyrite – Boxers & Saints; Printz – Midwinterblood
2013: Pyrite – Code Name Verity (Printz honor); Printz – In Darkness
2012: Pyrite – Chime; Printz – Where Things Come Back

So – the Pyrite has done well the last couple of years – not so much before then. Maybe the voters here have become more educated on what meets the criteria? Can’t wait to see how this year plays out!
