Peni, these two are unlikable! The reason I read the end of this book is I was half-convinced that Evie was crazy (all about eve?) and had killed Zabet. Evie was that bad. Yet I was still fascinated by her, by the relationships around her, wondering why she was like this, wondering where the story would go. The mystery is almost a side issue and I was a bit surprised it was resolved at all. I think Evie's getting caught up in Hadley/Zabet's life, especially the interaction with boys, will have appeal with teen readers (tho it wasn't so much me, so I didn't really get into those power games). It's funny you say Mr. McCabe is your favorite; I just finished EFRAIN'S SECRET and the parents were the 2 that most interested me! But that is because they are my age, I t hink.

Barbara, let us know what you think!

I spent most of the book wanting to slap both Evie and Hadley. Which is not an unreasonable way for a middle-aged woman to feel when reading a book about two teen-age girls! It's not for everybody, though. You pick this up expecting a thriller, you're going to be disappointed. This will be one of those books, like *Criss-Cross,* that the minority of literary readers love and large chunks of the YA readership will complain about, loudly.

But hey, literary YAs need something to read, too, and I may be underestimating the number of mainstream teens who will identify with Hadley and Evie so strongly that they won't notice how annoying and counterproductive their self-conscious secretiveness is. Mr. McCabe is probably only my favorite character because I'm pushing 50.
