Michelle, great point about it not being a “message” book. I especially loved how it wasn’t messagey about the friendships but it was clear to the reader what was happening.

I’ve just written my own review of this one, and come back to actually read yours carefully to the end (instead of just lightly skimming it) — I totally agree about how nice it is that there’s no easy magical answer to Lisa’s problems.

And I think Joanne raises a great point, with which I also agree totally–that a book like this a great way to sneakily infiltrate the ranks of the readers who might need and value the education this book gives, but might regject something overt like Wintergirls.

This was a great book! It’s an original way to speak to really sensitive and difficult issues while softening the blow. I enjoyed that it wasn’t preachy but made sure the points hit home and taught the reader something about anorexia and the people who suffer it.

Very true about it reaching people who wouldn’t want a realistic story. And while anorexia is part of the story, it’s more a story of a girl with anorexia than about the anorexia. Which I like.

Liz, I’ve read the ARC of this too. WINTERGIRLS, by Laurie Halse Anderson, is more powerful, but while WINTERGIRLS is chillingly realistic, Kessler’s supernatural take impressed the heck out of me. It might reach someone who wouldn’t want to read a realistic story about anorexia. It’s fast-paced and almost reads like a thriller.

Still horrifying, though.
