Michelle, it’s hard, when expectations are x and the book does y. In a different venue, I am struggling with that — MAD MEN & the season finale. To the point where I wonder if I’ll watch it next season…. I will, but not the same way I did before.

You make excellent points that make me re-think how I feel about the book. As you know I found this book to be the weakest of the three for a variety of reasons. One of which being the significant changes in Katniss from the earlier two. Not saying those changes aren’t warrented or that they aren’t relistic, just that they were a departure from what I’d come to expect. In the end I think part of the reason that I struggle so much with this book is that my expectations were so high but the book failed to meet them. I thought there were many valuable aspects to the book as a whole but some detractions that just made it kind of meh overall.

tanita, at some point, i want to go through and read it as one volume, all 3 titles straight through.

rockinlibrarian, I know! But I have to say it took me weeks of mulling over the book, and reading other reviews, to get to that “a ha” moment about katniss.

My thoughts pretty exactly– especially the part about Real Katniss vs. Public Katniss, even more especially how that related to READER expectations. Whenever I read a response that seemed to say that Katniss didn’t live up to their expectations, I thought, “Doesn’t being disappointed about that kind of miss the point of the book?

Thanks, Liz – looking at the trilogy as a whole helps me have a better appreciation for some of what was slightly confused for me in the last volume. I do like this series – I’ll always like it – but I know some people were deeply, deeply disappointed and/or hated it.
