adrienne, yay! glad you liked it. I met Franny Billingsley at ALA and gushed to her all about my love for Chime, and she confirmed that this is in an alt-type England, not a strict historical story.

Finally read this. WOW, it was good, and so different. I see why you struggled with what to say about it. When people ask me about it, I just kind of stammer, "It's really... good. Just really good." Thanks for the recommendation!

Adrienne, let me know what you think.

Sarah, there is fantasy, but like Sondy says, it's not your typical fantasy novel. For a while, I thought it was going to be a "the villagers have old fashioned beliefs..." type of historical fiction, but then it all turned out to be real. But the way the fantasy was woven in was very realistic, treated as "just another day, nothing unusual" manner. Also, it cannot be that Queen Anne because in addition to trains, there are motor cars. You know how some of Aiken's works don't seem fully alternate England, but they are? This is what I think is going on here.

Sondy, this one was so hard to right up!

Rockinlibrarian, when I know I'm going to be reading a book I stop reading reviews for it. And while I'm reading it, I also avoid reviews.

I'm in the middle of reading this right now, and will have to remember to come back when I've finished! (somehow, I can read a full review before I even think about reading a book, but when I'm in the middle of the book, it feels like cheating)

I've read this, but haven't reviewed it yet. Not quite sure how to do it justice. Amazing book. Definitely not your typical fantasy novel.

Queen Anne's reign lasted until 1714, so that fits the new century/second decade bit, but not so much the trains.

Not sure you've sold me, but that's because of my Increasing Aversion to All Things Fantasy. But I know you're not the only superfan of it, so I may cave one of these days.
