Joanne, I haven't read the author's books for adults so it's interesting to get feedback on the comparison. I think I read somewhere that this book grew out of a reference in one of her adult books? It's a unique book -- a unique voice -- and I look forward to hearing more kid feedback on it.

Michelle, "elaborate" is a good word for it!

Tamara, thanks! I am a bit ashamed to say I don't think I've ever read The Phantom Tollbooth.

Thanks for getting the word out about this amazing book. It's definitely a deep, rich read. As the teacher of 6th graders, I would put it in the category of The Phantom Tollbooth or Alice in Wonderland: a book not a lot of kids would pick up on their own, but one worthy of helping them access through read aloud. I'm still pondering the author's craft, word-play, and use of color-symbolism months later.

This one sounds like it is an interesting read. I don't know that it would be for me though. Might be a bit too elaborate.

I ordinarily enjoy Catherynne Valente's work immensely, but this one didn't have the same affect as her other books for me. As a book for adults it certainly isn't as nuanced or engaging as "The Orphans Tales" or "Deathless" and while it has been marketed as a middle grade or YA book, and I purchased it for my library based on such reviews, I can't really conceive of readers in my community who would read it. Now perhaps there are precocious young girls out there who would appreciate the whimsy and adventure in the story, but I just didn't find I could relate to the characters. As for the humor, I don't think it is of the sort that many of my readers would "get." I would definitely recommend it to a reader who absolutely adores Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland or teens into steampunk, because it certainly has an old fashioned, mannered feel about it, but there isn't that big an audience for that, at least where I am in Central California. I would be really interested to hear from librarians who have had younger readers really enjoy this book or what their experiences were with circulation.
