Sarah, I love that it's a standalone, and it made the ending so much better knowing it was over. That said, I wouldn't mind revisiting this world.

The setting and the characters drew me in also. Forget the horses (though she did make them incredibly creepy) but Thisby itself became this fascinating character in the book. There was just something about her writing that made this island come alive. I was incredibly impressed. I've only ever read Shiver by her and it didn't do much for me. But this, THIS BEAUTIFUL STANDALONE (YAY!) shows what true talent she has and the incredible possibilities that are created when writers have to work within one book, making tight and fabulous character arcs that have to be resolved (somewhat at least) within one book.

GORGEOUS.

Melissa, yes, I'm going to be putting together my Favorites for the Year, probably for next week if I can finalize it this weekend.

Donna, thank you!

Elizabeth, thank you!

Angie, yet, by the end, well -- I understood Gabe a bit better.

Sondy, now that you mention it I did read Black Stallion and some of the Misty books and loved them.

Michelle, YAY, we both love the same book!

Yes, yes and YES! A gorgeously written and sublimely romantic read (who'd a thunk with killer horses and all) that just knocked me on my patoot with it's awesomeness. I am SO glad that you loved this one too!

Oh, you made me want to read it all over again! (And I was in the middle of it when I saw you at KidLitCon. I hope I mentioned it! I was so annoyed when the plane landed and I had to stop reading -- but very enchanted with the book.) Yes, Sean would be a fabulous book boyfriend. (And, YES, what a refreshing romance!)

Now, I did love horse books as a girl. So I wasn't totally sure that my love for this book wasn't playing off of all that. And it reminded me of Pony Penning Day in Misty of Chincoteague. But more of having a fast wild stallion like the Black Stallion books. It captured all of that and added danger and love and the threat of losing home. Such a brilliant book.

Anyway, I'm glad to know it's not just girls who love horse books who love this one! :)

Yes. Yes, I hated Gabe. Something fierce.

And you're so right about Thisby. I wanted to go to there, too.

There is nothing about this book that is not beautiful.

Not only did you sum up my thoughts about The Scorpio Races perfectly, but you somehow managed to capture the eloquence and almost poetic tone of the novel. Awesome review for one of my new favorite books!

I agree 100% about the romance. Sean is a wonderful character, and the relationship he and Puck develop is done well, with subtlety and care.

As always, Liz, a fine review.

Are you going to put together a list of all your 2011 Favorite books? (Or are they already all in one place, and I just missed it?)
