Hallie, yes, not a tidy ending but an ending. Good point about whether the unanswered questions are needed to enjoy the book or not.

I liked that it was open-ended when I thought it was a standalone. I had some questions, but I didn't need them answered to enjoy the book. (Just to be contrary!)

Sondy, unanswered questions can be the toughest part of a trilogy.

It's going to be interesting to see what she does with it. I was annoyed, because I felt like ending the book when the quarantine ended implied that now everything would be okay. But everything is definitely NOT okay! And yes, will our main characters even stay on the island with so many family members gone? What is happening in the wider world?

There are so many unanswered questions. By ending it where she did, I thought she was ignoring them, so it's good to hear it's the start of a trilogy. I'm not absolutely sure I'll want to read it, having got off to such a bad start. But I'll be looking forward to your reviews of the next books.

Sondy, for the ending, I wonder what is happening with the outside world. Is this just one island that has been impacted? Do the characters have to react to reintegration to the real world? Or is the rest of the world also going into lawlessness?

As you know, I read this in the hospital, and it was NOT good hospital reading! I suspect I still wouldn't have liked the book at home -- way too many people die. But you've just wiped out my biggest peeve, which was the ending. If it's the first book of a trilogy, the ending is actually okay. Because I didn't like that it ends so abruptly. What kind of a future could these people possibly have with so many dead? Well, if there are more books, we can find out, and I can forgive the author for the abrupt ending.

I suspect I will want to read the next book and see if things get any better. But I will NOT read it unless I'm feeling completely healthy!
