Only A Month Or So Behind The Times….

J.K. Rowling‘s book for grown ups, The Casual Vacancy, will be published on September 27.

casualvacancy 196x300 Only A Month Or So Behind The Times....Back in July, the cover of the book was released to some mixed reactions.

The description of the book, from the US publisher, Little Brown: “When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity, and unexpected revelations? A big novel about a small town, The Casual Vacancy is J. K. Rowling’s first novel for adults. It is the work of a storyteller like no other.”

I’m looking forward to Rowling’s book for two reasons:

One, it’s J.K. Rowling. And I’m a fan.

Two, this sounds like the type of book I like.

As for the cover, I like it. It’s simple; it’s basic.

So, am I the only one looking forward to September 27?

  1. I’m looking forward to reading The Casual Vacancy. I admire Rowling for going in a different direction for her post-Potter novel–the reaction and reviews alone will be interesting.

  2. I’m really looking forward to it!

I’m anxious, too, although I was devastated to find out that I’m already #6 on the hold list at my library. Who are these jerks who got there ahead of me?! We’re getting 3 copies to start, but I may have to break down and buy the darn thing myself. I hate buying books anymore (my shelves are maxed out).

Jennifer, it would have been so easy for JKR to play it “safe” with something similar to HP. It will be interesting to see the reactions!

    Amy, me, too!

Lisa, my shelves, my shelves, I KNOW.

  5. Jenn says:

I am very much looking forward to it. It sounds very much along the lines of all the British tv shows I love and I’m curious to see what Rowling will do with an not-magical story. Plus, knowing that she’s a fan of so many non-kidlit, non-fantasy authors I adore gives me lots of hope.
