Edwards Award

And now, for a bit of blatant self-promotion.

I am a candidate for the 2016 Edwards Award Committee!

The Edwards Award “honors an author, as well as a specific body of his or her work, for significant and lasting contribution to young adult literature. The annual award is administered by YALSA and sponsored by School Library Journal magazine. It recognizes an author’s work in helping adolescents become aware of themselves and addressing questions about their role and importance in relationships, society, and in the world.

The full slate of candidates are at the YALSA website.

The YALSA blog has an interview with me.

The other candidates for the the Edwards Award Committee, with links to their YALSA blog interviews, are:

Jan Chapman
Valerie Davis
Lisa Goldstein
Jeanette Larson
Diane Tuccillo

If you are a member of YALSA, you can vote in the upcoming election.

The current recipient is Markus Zusak for The Book Thief, Fighting Ruben Wolfe, Getting the Girl, and I Am the Messenger.

The Edwards Award is celebrated at ALA Annual; this year, it’s a brunch. Having attended a luncheon or two where I’ve had to leave early (sometimes in the middle of a speech) because of committee obligations, I appreciate the new time.

ALA elections are March 19 to April 25.

If you’re a candidate in any upcoming ALA elections, please share in the comments!

(Edited to correct date mistake pointed out in comments….running in 2014 for a place on the 2016 Edwards Committee, that will read books in 2015 and announce in 2016.)

About Elizabeth Burns

Looking for a place to talk about young adult books? Pull up a chair, have a cup of tea, and let's chat. I am a New Jersey librarian. My opinions do not reflect those of my employer, SLJ, YALSA, or anyone else. On Twitter I'm @LizB; my email is

  1. Fantastic! I am very proud of you.

  2. Good for you, Liz! I’ll vote for you!

  3. WAHOO! Although I think you mean the 2014 ballot for the 2016 committee. The 2015 committee is in process. Whoops!

    • Elizabeth Burns says:

Oops, corrected. In my head I was thinking “2014 ballot”. But yes, it’s complicated; and suddenly the years fly by!

  4. A name I recognize! And respect! You’ve got my vote.
