Not On The Yarn: Laurel Snyder

Colby: I listen to a lot of podcasts. A lot. It is always fun to hear children’s literature creators featured on shows that are not about children’s literature. I thought it would be fun to share these hidden kid lit gems. I didn’t know what to call this series, so I “hired” my co-host Travis Jonker to come up with a title, and just like that… “Not on The Yarn” was born.

I recently finished Laurel Snyder’s 2017 novel Orphan Island. The book completely blew me away. If you love this book half as much as I do, it will be your favorite book of 2017. It is that good.

Each time I read a new Laurel Snyder book, I think about the piece she did for NPR’s All Things Considered: A Name and the Choices it Represents. The first time I heard the piece, I listened with a tear soaked face. Each time I read a new Laurel Snyder book, I go back and listen to the piece again, and my heart thanks Laurel Snyder’s mom for choosing to go through with her pregnancy.

Laurel’s Orphan Island doesn’t come out until May.

Sad, right?

The world needs Orphan Island! While you eagerly await your trip to your local independent bookshop to pick up Orphan Island, you should head over to the Nerdy Book Club to read a few words Laurel wrote about the book. Click on the image below to check it out.
