Review: ‘Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!’ for iOS

Oceanhouse Media, one of the leading producers of book apps for children, has released another Dr. Seuss title, bringing the number to 22 in that series. If you haven’t viewed one of their Seuss apps yet, three free lite versions are available: Green Eggs and Ham, Dr. Seuss’s ABC, and The Cat in the Hat.

Title: Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!
Author: Dr. Seuss
Developed by: Oceanhouse Media, Inc.
Platforms: iOS 3.0 or later
Version: 1.08
Price: 3.99

PreS-Gr 2-Oh, Dr. Seuss has an app! Much like the 1975 print version of the book (Beginner Books), Oceanhouse Media’s production encourages readers to stretch their imaginations. Unlike the print edition, it offers children several options: to read the story independently, to listen as the book is read aloud page-by-page, or to choose an auto-play feature that lasts about nine minutes.

In the first two options, children can touch individual words to see them enlarged and hear them repeated; tapping the illustrations elicits labels and identifies colors in all three modes. Readers must engage with subtle interactive elements designed to advance the story–touching the colorful question marks on pages progresses the text and the illustrations, and, in one case, adds a cherry on top of a schlopp.

Navigation is simple and a persistent return button takes readers back to the main menu. A swipe arrow appears on each page when interactive options have been exhausted. Advertisements for other Seuss titles and Oceanhouse products are present but easily removed by tapping the main menu’s information button and turning off the “News” button. This app is ideal for a primary classroom listening center and is worthy of most elementary school library collections.–Karen Jeremiah, Mary Scroggs Elementary, Chapel Hill, NC
