Blue Hat, Green Hat is the third Sandra Boynton board book made into an app by Loud Crow Interactive, a producer of quality digital books for children. The company’s list of apps may be short, but it’s list of accolades is long.
Title: Blue Hat, Green Hat

PreS-K–Boynton’s beloved board book (Little Simon, 1984) about a confused turkey has been made into an app. Children can choose to read the story themselves, or listen to Billy J. Kramer’s mellow narration. On each spread the bird attempts to follow the lead of the three creatures that precede him as they put on articles of clothing. They know that shoes go on feet and hats on heads, but not so the gobbler.
The word “OOPS” appears against a bright red rectangle below the bird’s feet each time he’s seen. Pressing the word will make the turkey somersault, socks fall from the sky, or set in motion other amusing actions. Additional interactive options have the creatures walk or jump into a pool. On one page readers can take clothes out of a dresser and dress the turkey (effecting a corresponding change in the attached labels: “red shirt” becomes “blue shirt,” etc.). The soft, pleasing soundtrack will enhance listeners’ experiences.
Children will be drawn to Boynton’s bright illustrations, the humor, and the app’s intuitive features. The youngest listeners may even learn the names of colors and/or articles of clothing.–Kari Allen, The National Writing Project in New Hampshire
