PreS-The meaning of friendship is key in these two action-packed, gentle animal tales. The stories dive right in with quick introductions to the appealing lead characters: Mole, Ant, Squirrel, Snail, Frog, Duck, and Beaver. In Champions (2007), the group is excited that there is going to be a relay race. The friends help each other along (Mole runs with Snail on his back), but the other team falters due to small tiffs and mistakes. Our happy group ends up winning and all the competitors enjoy the celebration.

In A Very Special Wish (2006) the animals surprise slow-moving Snail with a seemingly odd set of birthday presents. Snail is very polite and thanks them all. After a few giggles, the animals assemble the gifts into a racecar, which allows Snail to keep pace with his friends. Bright colors and expressive details against white backgrounds will draw readers and listeners into these cheerful tales.

Multiple languages (English, French, German, Spanish, Dutch) can be read or heard on each app. The well-paced narrations are appealing, and the tone and vocabulary of the stories are appropriate for young listeners. In every mode, background sounds and small, effective animations extend the experience. Pages are turned with a swipe or a tap. There are plenty of details to discover and ideas to discuss, inviting multiple uses. Parents will welcome the subtle but clear messages of these stories.–Elisabeth Le Bris, Joseph Sears School LTC, Kenilworth, IL
