PreS-Gr 3-In That’s the One!, Sam’s mum has finally allowed him to get a pet, so off he goes to Mr. Lambert’s pet store to choose a creature. Unfortunately, each animal the boy selects proves to be a poor fit for his mother. The tortoise is too lazy, the tarantula scares her, the dog makes her nervous, and on and on. Mr. Lambert is about to give up when a most unusual pet lands on Sam’s nose and proves to be the perfect fit.

show offs Thats the One! and Show Offs Multilingual Picture Book Apps from Piccolo BooksShow Offs! is a cumulative story of one-upmanship. When new neighbors move in next door to a young girl and her mom, the woman is compelled to demonstrate how her daughter is more accomplished than the man’s son and a competition of increasingly ridiculous proportions ensues. The story ends in a justifiably silly turnabout in which the parents are forced to confront the consequences of their bragging.

With relatively few of the bells and whistles that mark many other picture book apps, it’s the stories that star in these titles. A particular strength, however, is that each story is available in five languages: English, Dutch, German, Spanish, and French. The whimsical artwork in both titles incorporates subtle interactivity and the sound effects in the read-aloud modes nicely complement the texts, both of which are read by a pleasantly voiced narrator. Solid choices.— Mary R. Voors, Allen Country Public Library, Fort Wayne, IN
