For those of you keen on trying something a little different, this is the list for you. These are the books that gives you faith in publishing. Because if someone thinks that these can sell in American, things can’t be all that bad.
Here is my list of some of the best, brightest, loveliest poetry of 2020. Do not let these books escape your notice! They are best read every month of the year (and not just April!). An ode to the 811s . . .
In a year when so many of us were left speechless at the events of the world, there is comfort in finding books that are just as speechless as we. That doesn’t mean, of course, that they don’t have something to say.
This year I was impressed by the sheer variety of the stories on display. Hope you like your tales done in all kinds of styles from all kinds of places! This year was a good one for this category.
These books have figured out how to appeal. Whether they sport an original idea, a great translation, or scintillating art, there’s something to enjoy in each and every last one of these books.
Today all forms of photography have their place here. That means that if the art in the book mixes traditional media and photos or it’s a nonfiction work or uses photographed models, they all belong.
I like to celebrate those books, with some kind of “message” to impart, that do so with minimal didacticism. These books do a great job of teaching without forcing. I salute their worthy efforts and the folks who brought them to life.

There wasn’t a whole lot to laugh at in 2020, that’s for sure. Yet a great big list of wonderfully funny picture books came out, and here are some of the best. A bit of much needed levity for the year.
If you’re going to commit to rhyming then you better be pretty darn sure of your own abilities. To that end, today I celebrate those picture books that embrace their rhyme schemes to their fullest.
Here are the two things I know to be true: Never devalue a truly great readaloud picture book when you find it. And never try to force a lapsit book into a starring role in front of a crowd.
This year I found a nice array of titles that I’d say are a cut above the rest. These are books that you’d be honored to pull out year after year for your holiday displays.
