
I may not speak another language well, but even so I can still celebrate those books originally published in English and now released in another language, as well as books released simultaneously in both another language and English.
Recently it occurred to me that when it comes to bilingual picture books, there is a kind of art to their design. Today I speak to editor-at-large Louise May about her approach to the form.
On 31 Days, 31 Lists I always include a day of celebration for “bilingual books”. What do I mean by that? Well, either these are books that were originally in English and were translated to another language, or they feature both English and another language in their text. Whether a book contains two languages on the page, was published simultaneously in another language, or was published in a new language in a subsequent year, it’s time to give bilingual books their due. Whenever possible I try to credit the translators, but it can be tricky sometimes. In any case, here are some truly beautiful and inventive books.
