Battle of the Books

2013 Judge: Adam Gidwitz

Adam Gidwitz’s first novel, A Tale Dark and Grimm, is a New York Times bestseller, and was named one of the best children’s books of the year by School Library Journal and Publishers Weekly. His second book, In a Glass Grimmly, also a New York Times bestseller, was named a best book of the year by Publishers Weekly, Kirkus, and School Library Journal—which wrote, “Gidwitz is back with a second book that, if possible, outshines A Tale Dark & Grimm.” Last time he was involved in the BoB, his book was getting pulped by Andy Mulligan’s Trash. Which, in case you haven’t read it, is a darn good book.

  1. I LOVE Adam Gidwitz! Not only are his books great, but he’s a fantastic speaker as well. I saw him at a book festival last year, and both the kids and the adults loved him.

  2. Adam is awesome! We just had him come do a school visit this past Friday. The students AND teachers are still talking about it. He was so engaging and had the kids completely enraptured. It’s pretty neat to see 7th and 8th graders sitting close and hanging on to every word.

  3. Is there enough gore in any of our contestants to satisfy the blood-lust of Gidwitz? His books find such a big audience at my school. Kids looking for scary, creepy, or exciting duke it out. I find them hilarious.

My guess is that the above photograph was taken in either Monica’s school or Roxanne’s library the first week of March.

  4. I cannot wait to find out what he’s judging — that should be a fascinating round.

  5. Battle Commander Battle Commander says

Actually, no, the photo was not at Monica’s and Roxanne’s school, but elsewhere. However, it so happens Adam IS at our school today! Just finished the second of two sessions with each fourth grade class (came last week and this week) and will end the day speaking to the whole 5th grade in the library. Maybe I’ll suggest he recreate the above photo then:) (Monica-half of the BC.)
