2014 Judge: Vaunda Nelson
A children’s librarian and author, Vaunda Micheaux Nelson blames her life in books on a mother and father who read relentlessly to her. Through her work she hopes to give young people some of what her parents gave her — opportunities to grow through story. Nelson’s No Crystal Stair came out on top in last year’s SLJ Battle of the Kids’ Books, won the 2012 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for Fiction and a 2013 Coretta Scott King Author Honor. She received the 2010 CSK Author Award for Bad News for Outlaws and has served on Newbery and Caldecott award committees.
