Inside Good Comics For Kids

Interview: Bill Amend

On May 10th through 12th, while attending the Toronto Comic Arts Festival, I ran around to as many of my favorite kids comics creators as I could and asked them all the exact same questions. Keep in mind, exhibit halls are crazy loud and crazy busy (even when they’re held in a library), so there is a lot of background noise. Let me know in the comments if you have trouble hearing anything and I’ll translate for you.

One of the things I love most about Fox Trot is how on top of popular culture it is. Bill Amend’s response time to things happening on TV, movies, and even on Twitter seems nothing short of magical when you consider how long the lead time is for most newspaper comic strips. It was only after attending Bill’s panel at TCAF that we learned that the main reason he’s able to have his thumb on the pulse of pop culture is that he runs really, really close to missing his deadline.

It turns out Bill Amend and I have a lot in common.
