Ride On Is Faith Erin Hicks’ Next GN

Faith Erin Hicks has announced on Twitter that her next graphic novel, Ride On, would tackle a childhood favorite: horses! And riding. And also Star Trek.

Ride On will be released by First Second in Winter 2022. Although inspired by her time as a “horse girl”, it’s not autobiographical; instead, it’s about loving something and then moving on. The publisher provided this summary to ComicBook.com:

“Horseriding used to be everything Victoria thought about. But after she had a falling out with her childhood best friend, Taylor, she withdrew from riding and the riding community. During that time away she became interested in other hobbies, but her love for horseriding never left her. And so she returns to the riding community, this time at Edgewood stables, a less prestigious and lower pressure stable than the one she used to ride at. Here she makes new friends and also rekindles her passion for the sport.”

Here is some sample art.

Her announcement was responded to with a number of jokes about how hard it is to draw horses, to which she answered, “it’s like drawing anything, you learn where the shortcuts are.”

Stories about young people, particularly young women, and horses have long been favorites in prose. It’s surprising that it’s taken this long for a graphic novel to tackle the subject, but the perception of the art challenges may account for that.
