The Picks:

Fifth Quarter GN – First Second releases a new series about a girl who deals with her insecurities through her love of basketball. Lori Block is a fourth grader who feels awkward and out of place in her daily life, until she gets on the basketball court. She is dedicated to her team, despite only getting to play during the extra period before the real game starts. Known as the fifth quarter, this is where the not-so-good kids play and the points don’t count. But that doesn’t matter to Lori, because working on her skills gives her hints of self-confidence. Lori pursues her passion with athletic promise and a dogged determination to keep improving. Her drive will allow her to navigate awkward social dynamics and her own expectations, as she finds true courage on the court, in school, and at home. This is a series that both kids and adults will enjoy.

Pawcasso GN – Henry Holt presents the story of an unexpected friendship between a lonely girl and the coolest canine in town. Eleven-year-old Jo is bored and lonely until one Saturday she spots Pawasso trotting into town with a basket, a shopping list, and cash. Jo follows the dog, and when a group of kids from school see her with him, they mistake her for Pawcasso’s owner. Jo hides the truth from her new friends and agrees to let Pawcasso model for an art class the kids attend. But when animal control starts to receive complaints about a dog wandering town without a leash, Jo’s Chihuahua-sized lie could grow to Great Dane proportions. With Pawcasso’s freedom at stake, Jo will need to spill the beans and put her new friendships at risk. Readers will enjoy this cute and charming story. (Check out Caleb’s review for more.)
