Thirteen-year-old Bangladeshi-American Nisrin is attacked after giving a presentation at school in traditional Bangladeshi dress. Traumatized by the hate crime, Nisrin decides to wear hijab as she starts as a freshman in high school that fall. Her decision angers her mother and grandparents and makes her a target of students and teachers alike, but it also puts her on a path to discover more about Islam, learn her family’s reasons for leaving Bangledesh, and figure out what really makes her happy, with the help of friends old and new.
