The Picks:

Buckhead #1 (Of 5) – BOOM! Studios debuts an afrofuturist sci-fi series. Toba and his mother, a renowned scientist, immigrate from West Africa to the U.S. Instead of living in the Big City like Toba always dreamed, they move to the sleepy little town of Buckhead, located in the Pacific Northwest. Toba soon discovers things aren’t what they seem in the picturesque and pedestrian town. With his newfound friends, he starts playing a strange video game that replicates ancient Benin and its people. But when his friends are brainwashed by microchips and men in black appear in town, Toba is on the run. He has to solve the mystery of his new hometown and save his friends before it’s too late! This new series combines West African mythology with video games and improbable science to create a story filled with mystery, suspense, and action.

Maker Comics Conduct A Science Experiment GN – First Second Books releases a new Maker Comics that shows the fun side of science. Reed thinks he’s about to get to spend his summer break playing video games and making videos with his friends. But after a year of struggling with science, his moms arrange for his older sister Olive to come home from college and help him out. Reed is furious at first to have to give up internet time for summer school, but the week of hands-on experiments that Olive has planned shows him that science is more than memorizing facts. Bit by bit, Reed starts to realize that science is actually kind of cool. This graphic novel includes six step-by-step STEM experiments for readers to try.
