Last Chance for Comments on the 15 Heavy Medal Mock Newbery Books

All fifteen books from our Heavy Medal Book List have been featured in separate posts, with lots of excellent discussion and analysis. Thanks to the members of the Heavy Medal Award Committee (HMAC) for introducing these books, and thanks to all who have participated in the discussion these past few weeks.

If you have any final thoughts or lingering questions about any of the books, now is the time. The HMAC members are reviewing the comments and will select the Final 5 from the list of 15 this weekend.

That Final 5 will be the featured books in the HMAC Mock Newbery deliberations which will be held during School Library Journal’s live Mock Newbery Webcast on Friday, January 21st at 1:00 pm EST. You can observe the discussion and chime in with comments and polls; sign up for this free webcast here.

We’ll announce that Final 5 list here on Heavy Medal some time this weekend. Also, look for our Reader’s Poll here next week: that’s where we’ll invite everyone to cast a ballot using the full list of 15 titles the Heavy Medal Book List.

Apropos of nothing, an animated version of El Deafo recently debuted on Apple TV+. Cece Bell co-executive produced, co-wrote, and narrates. I just watched the first episode, and it’s really great. Even though the original GN could scarcely be improved upon, the availability and striking use of sound adds fresh emotional dimension to Cece’s story. All of us who loved this seminal piece of Newbery history should check it out, if possible.
