A peek at the Horizon 2012 for K12
The NMC Horizon Report > 2012 K-12 Edition is a collaborative research effort of the New Media Consortium (NMC), in collaboration with the Consortium of School Networking (CoSN) and the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). The official report will be released in June at the 2012 NMC Summer Conference in Boston, hosted by MIT.
But for now, the NMC Horizon Project Short List > 2012 K-12 Edition shares the top emerging technologies, trends, and challenges that the advisory board believes will have a major impact on teaching, learning, and creative inquiry over the next five years. And the NMC Horizon Project Preview > 2012 K-12 Editionadvisory offers a preview of the recently narrowed-down list of items that will be in the June final report.

Both documents identify key trends and significant challenges. Here’s a peek from the pdfs:
The Horizon Project is designed to help educators and thought leaders across the world build upon the innovation happening at their institutions by providing them with expert research and analysis. Much of the work of the researchers (as well as the work of the other Horizon projects) is transparently available on the project wiki (a sandbox packed with informative readings and discussion!) and is shared openly under a Creative Commons Attribution License.
As I look at these trends and challenges, I see so many sweet spots for school library leadership. For next year, is it time for our programs to address the learning potential of (for instance) mobile apps, tablets, game-based learning, and personal learning environments?
