Pyrite Vote Commencing!

We’ve revisited our top 11 Pyrite Nominees, and those of you headed to MidWinter are likely already en route (or snowed in, which I hope isn’t too many of you), and all that means

(insert drumroll)

it’s voting time!

The plan: We’ll use the comments for voting, with polls to close Friday at midnight or so. We’ll tally everything Saturday morning, post the result, and run the honor vote with super tight turnaround. Our final slate will be up by Sunday evening, just before the (bound to be unexpected) Youth Media Awards announcement on Monday morning.

Pyrite Time, Once Again

Here at Someday, we have a tradition (this is year three) of a Mock Printz which, in a fit of serious humor,* we styled the Pyrite Printz. (Get it? Because Pyrite is like gold but not? Also, alliterative.)

As always, we are still (still!) reviewing serious contenders and reading away madly to catch up with all the surprise books (Carnival at Bray, anyone? No nook version and no copies at, count ’em, FOUR bricks and mortar stores).

But that’s us, and the Pyrite, my friends, is about you. So it’s time to get it started.

The List, Revisited (and Shorter!), Plus Thoughts on Other Lists

Actually an order list, but a lists is a list, right? Also, for any fellow stationery geeks: that’s a Nemosine Singularity pen (filled with Noodler’s Squeteague and tuned by me) on a Levenger Circa notebook. If you’re going to make lists you might as well enjoy yourself.

Oh lists, we love you so!

And it’s open season for year end lists — PW’s early entry was followed by SLJ, and then Kirkus, NPR, the New York Times, and The Horn Book all joined the fray. Plus the Morris and YA Excellence in Nonfiction finalists (both YALSA awards, like the Printz) were made public. SO MUCH DATA. It’s amazing. So let’s take a look, crunch some numbers, and revisit what actually seem to be the real (for a purely speculative value of real) contenders of the year.

Welcome back!

It’s September, which means we’re back!

If you’re new here, this is the place to be for Printz speculation (we’re here and you’re here, so it must be). Admittedly, we’re usually wrong when it comes to predicting the winners, but that’s ok: the point is not to accurately predict but to speculate and discuss at RealCommittee level the plausible contenders for the Printz Award.

Of course, Printz committee work is shrouded in secrecy, and none of us are on the committee, so we’re just guessing. Mostly we’re here for fun — because don’t we all love arguing passionately about books? — and we’re thrilled to be back online and gearing up our arguments to defend our top choices for the 2015 gold!

Want to know what to expect? Need to catch up on your reading so you can join in? We’ll post our longlist later this week, once we’ve taken a look at the criteria and discussed just what “literary excellence” means. And we’ll be running our own Pyrite Printz later in the season so that we can have some RealCommittee style fun and voting.

So please, drop by the comments and say hi, and start plugging your top Printz picks — we can’t wait to get talking with you all!

The Pyrite Printz, or Pyrite, is the Someday My Printz Will Come mock Printz deliberation, and should not in any way be confused with YALSA’s Michael L. Printz Award, often referred to here as the RealPrintz or Printz. Our predictions, conversations, and speculation about potential RealPrintz contenders and winners reflect only our own best guesses and are not affiliated with YALSA or the RealPrintz committee. You probably figured that out on your own, but we like to make it clear!

Pyrite Thoughts…

The clock is winding down and the YMAs are coming!

And in the two weeks since we posted the Pyrite nominations, we’ve covered even more books. I’m thinking it might be time to start lining them up against each other, in preparation for a vote that will open at the end of the week.

So while we’re not done with our writeups yet (we have about 10 books to squeeze into the next 10 days!), I’m taking tonight to push for more conversation. To keep it in one place, I’m keeping comments closed on this post (if I can figure out how. Just pretend they’re closed, would you?). Essentially, you can consider this a big BUMP for the 12/31 Pyrite Nominations Results, so head back over there and let’s really dig in!

Finding Sleepers

I’d like my book discovery to be this whimsical (and slightly reminiscent of the TARDIS, too!). Failing that, I’ll take any suggestions!

Suggestions for 2013 books have been flowing in, and I’ve been thinking a lot about how we find books, and how we create the contender list that we post come the on-season in September.

(A brief housekeeping note: unlike our fellow award bloggers over at Heavy Medal and Calling Caldecott, we won’t go totally dark in the off-season, mostly because if we did, no one would ever be able to keep up with the reading when the on-season rolls around. So we’ll still be around, posting every week or two, from now until August, about what we’re reading and what we’re seeing and what we think may have Printz legs and, if we think there are any hard thorny questions about the Printz worth visiting or revisiting, possibly tackling those as well.)

(Edited to add: well, we kind of went dark because LIFE. But we’re not gone. We’re reading and thinking and we’ll post again one of these days soon and we love and miss you all a lot.)

So let’s talk about creating the contender list. And about crowdsourcing. And mostly about discovering the secret gems.

Top 5(s)

Hopefully you’ve already voted for the Pyrite Printz* (if you haven’t, do so!), but maybe you had some Printz picks that didn’t make that shortlist?

Well, so do we. So we thought we’d fill these final hours before the Pyrite polling closes by talking about our top 5s.

And as we talked through our lists, a very interesting dichotomy came up: were we going to discuss our top 5 books from the heart? Or from the head?

Because there were differences, although they aren’t mutually exclusive lists. So we decided we’d give you both!

Note that these are not predictions — we’re going to make our best guesses as to what the RealCommittee will choose (and doubtless be completely wrong!) on Sunday, at the very 11th hour. No, these are hopes, and dreams, and books we can’t let go of.

We’re ba-ack!

Hello hello from snowy upstate!

We are back, and we have a lot to say, starting later this evening (now that we’re in, we have some post editing and such to do. Also, children.).

But in the meantime, comments are so very open and also we wanted to make sure you had the new URL to bookmark. Although if you are reading this, you must have figured it out. Hmmm.

Anyway, please bookmark blogs.slj.com/printzblog (or just remember it, since it’s so nice and tiny!), poke around our shiny new site, comment like mad, and let us know if you come across any quirks or issues — there may be some, and the quicker we hear about them, the quicker they can be corrected.

And yay! It’s good to be back.
