I am an unabashed lover of the Artstor database and I was thrilled to discover a recent Artstor blog announcement sharing that more that one million images, videos, documents, and audio files from public institutional collections are now freely available without a login.
You don’t need to be a subscriber. Simply visit http://library.artstor.com
All this lovely new discoverability is possible because contributing institutions make their content available via JSTOR Forum, a tool facilitates the cataloging, management, and sharing of digital media collections.
In addition to the art in the Public Collections provided by a wide array of institutions, the general public now has access to
- Curriculum Guides
- Subject Guides
- AP Teaching Resources
- the LibGuide offering an overview of the freely available Public Collections, including pages on the following
- Archaeology & Antiquities
- Architectural Drawings & Photographs
- Artists’ Books
- Botany
- Campus & Institutional History
- Courses & Student Work
- Fieldwork & Faculty Work
- Manuscripts
- Maps
- Multimedia
- Museum & Gallery Collections
- Oral History
- Ornithology
- Special Collections
- Teaching Collections
- Fashion, Costume & Theater
- Omeka Sites
The images in Library.artstor.org are also available in Artstor’s Shared Shelf Commons, its free, open-access image library.
Users may search and browse, use the tools to zoom, print, export, and share images from this long list of participating organizations.
Thanks to Gary Price for this lead.
