Pyrite Slate, 2018

It’s official! We have done it! We named our winner last week, and now we’ve got our honor books. Votes came in, spreadsheets were made, and many other things happened — and it was all done in the passive voice, I guess.

But who can think about grammar, really, when we have a completely fictional award to give out!? Once again, you’ll have to imagine me with Bachelor-ish roses, and an intense close up on my face — and I guess all the authors’ faces, because OF COURSE they would join a reality TV version of the Pyrite, right? — with striking music playing to really heighten the tension. Pyrite 2018: Honor Vote

Red Rose, from Wikipedia

We’ve done some of the hard work, in voting for and naming our winner. And what a winner — can you imagine getting to call Angie Thomas and say, “we loved your book and are giving you an award”?! I mean, we are not actually giving an award, let’s be clear. We are a mock committee. But what a great year to be reading YA, huh? As was noted, there are so many directions RealCommittee could go; the YMAs are going to be pretty exciting.

But! Our own Pyrite process  is not over yet! As I said earlier, we have more roses to give out — more tough decisions to make. There are more medals (roses? I’m feeling that Bachelorish metaphor this year, even though it’s really mixing things up, and we’ve tended to medal/sci fic jokes in the past) to award. We’re giving out up to four more spots, to be precise.

So! People! We will need to choose four more books before our work is done! [Read more…]

Pyrite: Let the Honors Commence

Here we go: honor voting!

Votes are weighted: 7 for 1st place, 5 for 2nd, 3 for 3rd, and 1 for 1st. We will recognize four Pyrite honors (or Nickel books, since that’s sort of the silver equivalent to pyrite); we are limiting voting to only books that received at least one vote at any level in the Pyrite poll. This is not exactly RealCommittee procedure; it is, instead, a mashup of the straw polling regulations and the Newbery rules, put into play here to account for the fact that we don’t have a real nomination list and so the number of discrete titles we’re looking at could be vast without some limiter.

See below the break for the list of books that are eligible with that rule in place and to vote, as per usual, in the comments. We’ll leave this up until after the New Year, and post results probably on Monday.

Decisions, Decisions!

Oh how pleased we are to report that today, you voted and you were decisive!

We ran the total numbers (only 30 voters; everyone else was probably on a plane en route to Dallas, which is where I wish I was headed!) three ways: total voters and points, and then only those who had read all 9 books (5 voters) and again for the 9s and 8s combined (7 voters), just to see if there was any noticeable change based on number of candidates read.

And boy howdy there sure was! [Read more…]
