ALA Panel: ReTelling Stories
At ALA, I was on a panel organized by Robin Brenner (No Flying, No Tights): (Re)telling Stories: Fanart, authorship, and how stories are shared, reconstructed, and retold.
The panel was a great mix of folks (list taken from Robin’s site)
- Liz Burns (librarian, blogger, and reviewer at A Chair, A Fireplace, and a Tea Cozy at SLJ) (AKA me)
- Cecil Castellucci (author of Year of the Beasts, Plain Janes, Boy Proof)
- Faith Erin Hicks (comics artist and author of , The War at Ellsmere)Friends with Boys
- Deborah Kaplan (librarian, scholar, and representative of the Organization of Transformative Works)
- Marissa Meyer (author of Cinder and the upcoming Scarlet)
- Noelle Stevenson (comics and fan artist Gingerhaze, creator of Nimona)
- Josh Wattles (Advisor in Chief, deviantART)
Robin has a write up of the panel ALA 2012 Update: Fandom Panel line-up! Robin did a terrific job; she got an interesting mix of people, had terrific questions, and even though there was a bunch of us, everyone had the chance to speak and participate.
I would like to tell you more, but it was so fast and furious that I really couldn’t be on the panel and take notes about what was said. If anyone does have a post etc about it, please leave a link.

Also, to those who wish they were there — Robin has a panel organized for the YA Lit Symposium, November 2-4, St. Louis MO. I will be there, but the panel will feature different folks and with a slightly different focus. From the YALSA YA Lit Symposium website: “YA Literature and Fan-Created Work. Fan created works, from fan fiction to fan art, are an increasingly visible and a richly rewarding way for fans to interact with their favorite stories. At the same time, fan works raises sticky questions about copyright and the meaning of transformative work for literature and authorship. Join a panel of authors, editors, librarians, and fans to explore the impact of participatory fan culture has had and will continue to have on teen literature. Presenters: Robin Brenner and Elizabeth Burns.”
