Wednesday morning’s keynote inspired. Tim Tyson, principal at Mabry Middle School, shared his students’ work. A big fan of Dewey’s active learning, Tyson believes the things that are important in education:
Connectedness
Meaningfulness
Significance
Contribution
Tyson’s 7th grade student films attacked real (and big) questions.
Bob Sprankle’s students produced an amazing video on how to produce a podcast. Bob’s students demonstrated an ownership of their learning. Their engagement is inspiring.
Podcasts or blogs are living portfolios. Archived, shows growth over time.
Kids writing for a real audience.
Of the four, Tyson thinks the most important is contribution–active process, highest level of Bloom
Create purpose so the wind won’t blow it all away. So much we do is for that day or that text. Shared his 4th grade report card.
Bob’s student reflections on self-directed learning are very powerful. Bree’s animal corner–two animals adopted as result of her work. Shy Elizabeth later took it on and it became Elizabeth’s Ark. Overcame fear. Called the shelter. Loved the weird fact of the week. Called Ripley’s for permission. I want a partner, but I don’t want a 4th grader, I want a 3rd grader so it will keep going. Emily’s writing corner, I want to reteach everything you teach us. Non-math student took on partnering in the Math Corner and is now teaching math to others.
