Liveblog & Monday Morning Quarterbacking
Well, here we are, YMA Day!
I’ll be watching the award stream since I am sadly not in Chicago, and I’ll do some live reaction blogging for the YALSA portion of things. See you in the comments after for the Monday morning quarterbacking (on a Monday morning, no less!)
Also, while there may be shock, outrage, glee, or any other manifold emotions pouring off of me, I want to take a moment to reflect, very seriously, on the incredible hard work the RealCommittee has done. I reserve the right to disagree, but in the end I know how intense and amazing that process is, and I recognize that they are always right, because that’s what the process does. It separates the emotion from the criticism and gives us something very close to an unbiased slate. Thank you, RealCommittee, for all you’ve done this year! I can’t wait to find out what you have in store.

And now, for the live(ish) reaction portion of the morning.
Whew! We’re having tech issues, but we’re here!
Schneider. It occurred to me that El Deafo has a better shot than what I predicted. Let’ see…
Oh. Rain Reign. So, I haven’t read it, but Disability in Kidlit said there were some issues.
And now YA — Oh! Of COURSE Girls Like Us. How did I flub that guess? It’s perfect.
Stonewall! I forgot to include a prediction for this.
YAY! Beyond Magenta was a no brainer but toally deserves it. And Joy is happy for I’ll Give You the Sun, of course! (I am too. She’s just happier.)
CSK! Our LS librarian has been doing an awesome CSK of CSKs with the LS students and my 7 year old is so excited for this one as a result.
Oh my god! Yay Deb! I have been lucky enough to serve on committees with her and she is a treasure of the profession and as a person. Tears in my eyes!
Clapping! Jason Reynolds is incredible — he visited our school recently and it was so incredibly inspiring. I can’t think of anyone more deserving for this.
Author honors…
I wanted Nelson to win but I can live with an honor. And very pleased about How It Went Down. And now — we all know what’s coming —
Okay, 1 for 3 on my predictions so far!
Joy just yelled “YALSA AWARDS!”
MAE. I have, as always, no guesses. But I am always pleasantly delighted and reminded of someone I love.
Sharon Draper! I was just thinking of her the other day.
Morris. There are two on the finalists that really deserve it. Which will it be?
YAY GABI!!!!!!!!
ENFYA. I haven’t read any of these (well, 2/3 of Romanov), so shame on me.
WHAT????? HOLD THE PHONE. How? What? The entire world just went up in shock!
(Now I REALLY have to read Popular.)
Audiobooks! OH! Yay for Julie Berry. I have this on my to-read pile, now I will have to listen instead! H.O.R.S.E. was totally off my radar but sounds excellent. Almost spoken word.
HERE WE GO
PULSE RACING
And We Stay! That’s a bit of a surprise. Miss_Print has been pulling for it.
Carnival at Bray? I definitely need to reread this now! So much I admired but so much I found flawed.
Grasshopper Jungle! Listen to the audience roar. It’s exactly right as an honor book.
This One Summer! Yay! But what will take the gold? Now I am really excited.
YAY! Joy is so happy right now. And honestly, issues with the ending notwithstanding, so am I!
Ok, we’re mostly out, although still watching.
AND we accurately predicted, in aggregate, three books! (2 each, with overlap). Also I called the CSK, but so far struck out on everything else.
Pyrite wise, we collectively rocked — we called the winner AND two out of three honors accurately! You all rock.
See you in the comments!
