Teens + Superheroes = A Perfect Fit: Our “Chronicle” DVD Giveaway
Chronicle is out on DVD tomorrow, and, even apart from the below giveaway opportunity, you may want to check it out if you missed it in theaters back in February.
That’s because Josh Trank’s film simultaneously represents one of the more interesting and thoughtful superhero movies of recent years… and one of the more interesting thoughtful teen movies of recent years. Moreover, the savvy combination of these two genres effectively creates a sense of wonder (one of my favorite topics, in case you didn’t know) that is rare in movies today. Yes, as we head into summer, there’s no shortage of superhero films boasting famous characters and big stars, but it’s precisely Chronicle’s everyday approach that distinguishes it.

In fact, its audience-involving “found footage” strategy situates it not just within a popular screen trend of the past decade, but also allows us to connect it to classic works of canon and YA lit, which is something I’ll be discussing at greater length tomorrow
In the meantime, thanks to Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, Connect the Pop has a couple of copies of the DVD for readers. The extras, by the way, are rather modest, but I do really like the “Pre-Viz” segment (which does feature the climax of the film, so beware of spoiling things for yourself). If you’re not familiar with previsualization, it’s a kind of animated storyboard sequence that allows filmmakers to explore different creative approaches to specific sequences before actually shooting them.
Okay, now for the giveaway rules:
- You must have a U.S. or Canadian mailing address to which Fox can ship the DVD.
- Leave a comment here about any of the above—what you think of Chronicle or why you’re looking forward to seeing it, the sense of wonder in movies today, your take on the current crop of superhero flicks… anything.
- “@” me on Twitter with the hashtags #Chronicle and #ConnectThePop in the tweet to let me know you’ve done this. (I’m @Peter_Gutierrez.)
- Everyone who does these two things between now and 12:01 am EST on May 16 will be entered into the drawing.
- If you don’t have a Twitter account, just have a friend or colleague tweet on your behalf, letting me know which comment here is associated with the tweet—but of course since the discs will be sent to him/her (see #6 below), you’ll have to work it out from there. (Or just start your own Twitter account in a couple of minutes, and close it when this giveaway is over.)
- I’ll notify you on Twitter, not here, if you’ve won a DVD, and if you don’t respond within 48 hours, I’ll just draw another name. If you’re a winner, you’ll simply DM me your mailing address and we’ll be all set.
