ICDL goes mobile
I just discovered that one of my very favorite booky destinations is now available as an app.
The International Children’s Digital Library, a beautiful, multilingual portal, offering a large collection of free children’s books from around the world, can now be viewed on your iPad and on your iPhone, as well.
The largest collection of its kind, the ICDL spans the globe with thousands of children’s books from over 60 countries, in a wide assortment of beautiful languages with captivating illustrations. Meet the six Mongolian brothers in search of knowledge, the gray Palestinian peacemaker cat that does something most unusual to the other cat’s ears, or a version of the Three Little Pigs that you surely have never heard before.
This is a must-download for parents, teachers, and librarians with devices.
The free app offers:
* The full ICDL collection (thousands of books)
* Books in dozens of languages
* iPad support for rotation (automatically shows two pages at a time in landscape view)
* Summaries in English and the native language of the book
* Special support for readability – by zooming text (for many books)
* Many books translated into other languages
The mission of the International Children’s Digital Library Foundation (ICDL Foundation) is to support the world’s children in becoming effective members of the global community – who exhibit tolerance and respect for diverse cultures, languages and ideas — by making the best in children’s literature available online free of charge. The Foundation pursues its vision by building a digital library of outstanding children’s books from around the world and supporting communities of children and adults in exploring and using this literature through innovative technology designed in close partnership with children for children.
