Fantasy BoB Commences & Pairing Reveal

Battle Commander (gravatar)

From Roxanne:

In the past few years, some of our (Monica’s and my) students participated as Kid Commentators and shared with all BoB followers their exhilaration when the Judges agreed with them and their bitter disappointment when they found a particular decision out of sync with their love for one title over the other.  These young readers (GI, RGN, and NS) are now in 11th, 12th, and 9th grade and although RGN and NS will continue commenting on the Matches this year, Monica and I thought that it would be superbly fun to open up the field and get more young readers to follow and shadow BoB.

I sent out a call to my middle school students (6th to 8th grade) and more than a dozen responded. We met this morning and went over the basics of BoB.  They also had a chance to examine the sixteen contenders.  These new BoB Kid Judges will each read at least one pair of the contending titles and write up their own short statements and decisions which will then be posted in the Comments section for each Match.

We wish to see other schools and libraries to host such Fantasy BoB Events!  Please comment below if you are running a Fantasy BoB event or know some young readers that wish to read one or two pairings and write up their reasons for specific decisions.   We will contact you via the email address attached to your comment.

  1. Mrs. Akers says:

Hello Battle Commanders! Are these the official match-ups for the first round battles?! Or were they matched up just for the Kid Judges?
I am the librarian at Morton Junior High, in Morton Illinois, and I run my own fantasy BoB too!
I distribute the official match-ups page and have students make their predictions based on summaries of all the books. Completed brackets are due back to me before your battle starts in March. All participants must read at least one book from the library, in their reading level, during the month of March. This can be any book, not necessarily one of the Contenders. Each battle is awarded a point value, 2 points for first round match-ups, 4 points for second round match-ups, 8 points for round 3 match-ups. The student that picks the closest to your completed BoB bracket will have the highest points and will win a $20 gift card to a local book store and a bag of skittles! As the battles are won, I make daily announcements in my Google Classroom and keep track on my bulletin board version of the BOB bracket in the Library. The kids love the competition! And they love to try to read as many books from the contender list as possible!
Thanks for the fun in the library! ~Mrs. Akers

  2. Other Meredith says:

Is that the order the matches will go in as well? This will help me as I try to finish reading all of them. Also, the kid commentators are always my favorite part of the battle, so I’m excited to hear from so many different ones this year.

  3. Kate Todd says:

Will you be posting these in a brackets format?

  4. Ghost versus The Girl Who Drank the Moon? Two amazing, award-winning books aimed at middle-grade readers up against each other in the first round?
    That is just mean.

  5. I hope the second and third rounds produce some interesting match-ups of totally disparate forms–picture books against YA, poetry and nonfiction against novels and so forth. One of my favorite parts is always seeing how the authors find touchpoints for comparing unlike things.

    • Battle Commander Battle Commander says:

We do, too! However, since this is the first year we are seriously including Picture Books on our Battle Ground — we want to be slightly cautious. The way the brackets are set up, there is at least a guarantee match-up between ONE picture book against ONE MG title and another MG title against a YA title in Round 3.

Those definitely will still be QUITE different from each other. Hopefully you’ll find each match still interesting to watch!

  6. Barb Jaindl says:

Already have a team of Ss ready to make the bracket bulletin board. Looking forward To finding a team who want to read and share comments!

  7. Did I miss the PDF with this year’s brackets?

  8. I’ve been running a Battle of the Books pool at the Horace Mann School since BoB first started! The kids love it.

  9. I have never participated before but this sounds like a fun way to get the kids involved in books! Is there a resource that provides a list of all the included books and a short summary for each?

    • Battle Commander Battle Commander says:

You can get a digital copy of the brackets (see link to post on how to do that on the sidebar). The books are also all listed there. No short summary though — you will get those from the judges once the battle commences!
